Do you love mushrooms too? Whether cooked in delicious dishes or added to your coffee, MushUp style? Because the pace of daily life sometimes makes us forget where our food comes from, we want to take you for a walk in the forest, the preferred natural environment for mushrooms! How do they grow, reproduce, and what are their health benefits? We went mushroom hunting for you.
The forest, a suitable habitat

The vast majority of mushrooms grow in forest environments where the presence of vegetation, particularly certain trees, promotes their development.
The varieties of mushrooms found in the forest are distinguished by the trees near which they like to grow. Some species grow near deciduous trees, others under conifers such as pine and fir.
The nature and properties of the soil in which they grow are also important factors in the development of mushrooms. Depending on the variety, some mushrooms thrive better in acidic or calcareous soils.
Mushroom “seeds”? No, spores!
Did you know that mushrooms can reproduce asexually? This is thanks to their microscopic spores, usually found in the gills of their caps. Dispersed by wind, water, or animals, these spores germinate in the soil, sometimes on trees, to form tiny filaments that will produce mycelium, the vegetative part of the mushroom. Often buried in the soil, the mycelium decomposes organic matter and absorbs the nutrients necessary for the mushroom's growth. It is thanks to the mycelium that its stem and cap develop!
They love the sun… and the humidity!
The vast majority of mushrooms (about two-thirds) appear before the first frosts in autumn. Why? Because in our region, this time of year often sees a combination of sunny and rainy periods, the ideal recipe for their growth! For growth to occur, it's important that the mycelium be subjected to a thermal and hydric shock, which typically happens when the soil is warmed by the sun, combined with its moistening by rain.
Mushrooms full of beneficial properties!
Mushrooms can be toxic or beneficial, both to ecosystems and to our bodies. If we focus on their usefulness, they can, depending on their variety, generate numerous benefits:
- They clean and allow the forests to regenerate.
- They are the main food source for a multitude of small animals.
- In medicine, many drugs - such as penicillin - were developed thanks to fungi.
- They occupy a central place in the kitchen: simmered in small dishes, or used in the preparation of cheeses, yeasts, bread or alcoholic beverages.
